I remember I promoted a grey player in FM2006, he was decent enough, but I released him after I won promotion to the Conference. He went on to have a long career playing for various clubs in the Scottish 2nd & 3rd divisions.

The yute in question just turned 17, so I've given him a pro contract. His attributes haven't changed much (if at all), but maybe a couple of years on my meat-grinder training regimes will have some impact.

I thought as soon as you sign grey players their attributes all dropped. (I know I am probably going back to CM4)

About the only time I play a grey is if all my keepers are unavailable otherwise I will try to put a square peg in a round hole and hope I don't get punished too badly untill the players become available again.

OK, this one's just plain weird.
I happened to notice that one of my greys was 20 - a good couple of years older than the rest of them. And while his attributes are a long way from being good enough for my team, I offered him a contract and... well, take a look for yourself .

Again, I'll keep an eye on him and see how much he improves.

Fudge me sideways, he has good attributes. It does depends on what his hidden ability ratings are though.

Well, he's been on loan to Maia - one of my feeders - for about 6 months and although his attributes have had only marginal improvements (a few have gone up by 1, none by more) he's played a reasonable number of games for them in Liga de honra with a respectable average (6.9) so it's clear he has some ability. Probably not enough to play at the top, but enough to merit a career, at least.

Didn't SI have a problem with greys in FM07,(or was it FM06) where the AI created greys for good Spanish and Italian sides when they needed players for European games and did not have enough players. I seem to remember something about this. They apparently created greys with fabulous stats.
I think you just got lucky and got one intended for one of the AI teams.

It's weird, really.

The only position that I get half-decent greys for is MR. Pretty much every grey who can play there gets reasonable stats. No other position, mind you...

As for FM06, when my Naval team played Porto, they frequently came up against disturbingly good greys. I think it was a problem the game had with not recognising U-19 players as being available for league matches. I never got anyone talented, of course.
