We were the stingiest team in the league bar eventual winners Hereford, but couldn’t find the net at the other end of the park. My brand new strike force failed to find any consistency so a new striker signed from Sheffield Wed reserves should hopefully rectify this somewhat. This now gives me a choice from 5 first team strikers – I sense a catfight brewing.

So another season of mediocrity beckons. We have 1.5m in the bank so finances are pretty healthy, hopefully the board will decide to go pro, but probably not.

A new striker in, lots of deadwood out and the season is under way. We got off to a fine start never dropping out of the top five until Feb when an appalling patch of form saw us lose our hold on first and drop to sixth. Only winning our last three games saw us claw back into the playoff picture.

So playoff semi final against recently relegated Bury. My number one and two striker, no.1 LB, versatile DRLC and AML captain all out injured. First game at our place ends 1-1. Return leg 0-0 after extra time. We sneak through on penalties using players who’ve never before stepped up to the spot, ever.

Finals: Another penalty nailbiter against Torquay and my nerves are shot.

For the first time in Spartan history League 2 beckons.
