What are the most important qualities for a good goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and striker? Which are those aspects which need to be highest for each role?

Download the hints and tip guide for FM 2007 from here:

It is for 2007 but it is still good for 2008. It will tell the attributes needed for each player.
