i've got him showing but it shows as a normal rectangle picture with the background in white. not a proper cut out.

your instructions just say to use the eraser to rub the background out?
i'm using paint.NET. would it be the same situation?

Did you save your image as a PNG file?

With Paint.Net (using the same photo as in the very handy guide  ) :

Open the photo and select the 'Magic Wand' from the toolbar. The tolerance box is set to 50% by default, change it to 30% and click on the grass in the photo. If some of the players face is selected as well change the tolerance down to about 25% and click again - You are aiming for the majority of the background to be selected. You can set the tolerance to a low level and select small sections at a time.

Once you've selected some (or all) of the background select Edit>Erase Selection or press the delete key. The chequered background represents transparency. Repeat as necessary.

Resize the image to 180x180 and save as PNG.

I don't know why but every time, I try to open this file it causes a problem and Word has to close.

Am I the only one like this?

Or maybe, would it be possible to just copy and paste the writing into the thread?

Just in case it makes any difference, I have Photoshop CS3
