It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default FM08 Marking - Zonal or Man

In previous games Zonal has always been what I've used. I have read that man marking has been improved for FM08 and am interested in anyones opinions or advice for using man marking.

I am managing at a very low level (Welsh Prem)and my inital thoughts are that it's easier to employ and analyse man marking rather than story.

All comments much appreciated!

Marking has definitely improved...personally I prefer using non-specific man marking now is much better to use. Zonal marking is ok..but I seem to think nonspecific man marking looks good.

Nonspecific is when you set a defender to manmarking w/o giving him a specific target.

Specific manmarking on the other hand, i have never liked, not because it doesn't work, but because it works too well. It'll encourage the AI to swap strikers and that's when problems start.

The problem for nonspecific manmarking is solostriker formations, it appears that the solo player gets treated in a zonal fashion so you should look to set one player on specific manmarking instructions to counter this.

Secondly, I remember reading a thread about marking opposition strikers, taking into account thier strengths (i.e pace, targetman etc). I've look about for it but I can't find it anywhere.

Do you know the thread I mean if so could you provide a link if possible? Thanks.

I've been using manmarking now for a while now...all my LLM tactics feature nonspecific man marking.

In 3 man defenses you may want to consider having the outer ones man mark and the SW do zonal and tight...the stoppers may need to close down much higher than normal dcs would.

I can't remember the thread offhand, it could be in the bible...much of what was said for 07 still holds for 08. Perhaps the sliders have become more intuitive.

When you say man-marking do you tick the tight marking for your centre backs & also do you have full backs on man-marking or zonal ? And do yo have them marking tightly or loosely? (sp?)

I don't tick tightmarking when i use man marking. My fullbacks never do manmarking. They are on zonal..so far I haven't been tightmarking. I did it for the demo but with the new match engines I haven't had a need to

I like to play 90 min match in the game.

In the 2007 version i did see that the zonal marking is not 100% good.

I see many times my DM C marking their striker between the central defenders, and the central defenders doing nothing, then my team becomes too weak in the middle pitch.

Many times i did see my Right/left full back marking their striker too and my central defenders doing nothing.

I dont have fm2008 right now but i hope this problem will be not in that game.

Sorry my english

I'm using man marking (not specific) across my back four and it's working well. I'm not losing quite a few games but I think my problems are at the other end of the pitch as I don't conceed more than 1 goal in a game.
