Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default FM08 Set Piece Discussion

I searched and couldn't find an discussion on set pieces for FM 08'.

So here it is! Feel free to discuss anything fitness related.

What specific stats do you look for, for corners.free kicks etc...?

What routines have worked well for you?

Do you ignore set pieces and why?

For free kicks I usually just go by their free kick ability and technique.
For corners I use the corner ability and technique again to decide. I usually have my best header going for a near post flick on, Have my 2nd best challenging the GK with my best finisher standing on far post. While my best long range shooter outside the area waiting for any scraps. Its got me about 6 goals so far this season and i'm in mid-December

I ignore set pieces - just leaving it to the default instructions.

I had a tinker with thinks like corner-taker and throw-in taker in FM06 - but selecting my RB to take long throws seemed to get him lower match ratings!

Also, I tried setting up attacking corners, but the problem is if I make a substitution or change my line-up, I have to redo the set piece instructions and that's tedious and time-consuming.

For defensive corners I've always been worried that I'll do more harm than good - it's not like I can properly see the oppositions instructions. I can say "Mark Tall Player" - but I have no idea where he's going to stand until it happens and then it's too late.
By setting instructions I feel I'm over-riding the players' sense.

Another grievance with set-pieces is that I can select free-kick takers for left or right, but not for long or close.

For example in FM07 I had Dean Ashton taking free-kicks.
Unfortunately this meant he'd take them from around the half-way line too.
I'm pleased that he didn't shoot from such long range - but by taking these free-kicks, he was way out of position and he would have been useful as a target man from such free-kicks.

While he was the best choice for shooting from free-kicks, but from there a passer/crosser with high creativity should have been taking the kick.
