It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Maybe I'm too dumb for FM. I seriously looked at this statement for a good five minutes, trying to figure out what the heck a "Collyer rash" was.

rashidi1: I'm confused - if the human manager has no idea of the size and/or placement of these "danger zones" how can we make any informed decisions with regard to closing-down? I've read the manual and can't find any such zones mentioned (please correct me if I am mistaken). Second, what defines an opposition player as being a threat? Is this purely down to player stats, or perhaps something a little more esoteric?

Thanks.

It's missing some punctuation: "a Collyer, rash?" would be better.

(both Collyer and Rash are names here btw)

How closely related are the dline and the closing down slider? Let's say I have my dline set to push up. If I then set my DC's closing down slider to the extreme left, do they literally close down closer to the dline (i.e. high up the pitch because of my dline setting) or do they close down closer to the goal? (Perhaps the "designated dangerzone" relates to this?) </BLOCKQUOTE>

They are related, the defensive line sets your depth of defending, closing down affects where, and this is all slightly affected by mentality since that affects positioning.

Simply put if you set up a high dline and you have high closing down, players will have a tendency to win the ball higher up the pitch, but if the opposing AI is fast it can break behind your defensive line

If you are playing with a deep dline then you can afford to play a sitting back game where you close down less and allow the AI to push into you, trying to make space. In this case you hold ground more and deny it passing chances.

You won't find it in the manual, look at your dots when they defend and observe very carefully when they go in for the challenge. Be careful to allow for players attributes, some may never challenge, being dastardly cowards. When players enter a certain zone around a player they will close down, the dot moves closer to engage and then when the AI moves away they pull off once he enters another players dangerzone.

Now think of closing down as a dangerzone..you have an area where the player is told.."here this is your house" sometimes zones can overlapp..this will be caused by excessive closing down instructions or even mentality settings.

Its something people need to understand to make effective tactics. It all revolves around the concept of zonal marking, where players are told to mark zones and not players. Regardless of who enters the "dangerzone" a player is told to close down. This is different from manmarking.

This is by far the most effective way of representing it in the engine, unfortunately its not coming out the way it was meant to...so I'd get a bit used to looking at dots moving around the way I explained.

Then it'd be easier for you guys later. I may have spilled to many of the beans on the engine, so I should shut up soon, and revert to my cave.

It's a symptom of stress caused by FM2008, the closing down problem in particular.

I never waited a patch for FM before playing it, but this glitch sent all the FM fun to hell. I tried everything and the same thing always happens,

RIP FM 2008... at least until the patch will (hopefully) revive it

In my opinion, it's not exactly "closing down" that is the issue, more "positional awareness" of players closing down if that makes sense.
