Do you play with a pushed up d-line and offside trap combined with an attacking mentality?
I'm having some problems defensively as well as scoring regularly playing with closing down, mentality, d-line all at the same slider position (2nd of attacking). Passing is set to 4 as well as tempo combined with normal width.
Back line have individual mentalities, CB at 6, FB at 8 mentality, tight marking, normal CD on centre backs and normal-high CD on full backs. DM is also set to 6 mentality and normal-high CD.
I think I'll try a more narrow approach and untick the offside and playmaker boxes to make my tactic more unpredictable. Sevilla are tearing me to shreds at the moment with their 4-2-3-1 at Ashburton.

| At home I am yeah- highest notch on defensive line, team mentality second highest (20- notch before all-out attack)- offside trap ticked.
I'm using team settings for everyone including the back four, and am not conceding much at all.
I've gone for narrow as it seems to get Hleb/Rosicky into the box more and they've both scored a couple of goals so far.
Obviously I don't play this adventurously away from home though!

That sounds really adventurous indeed. I've never experimented with extremely defensive or attacking formations. Maybe now is the time to try it?
I say this after losing my 3rd friendly in a row vs Sevilla (I'm reloading the saved game to experiment with different setups). Lehmann cheaply gave away posession to Kanouté. These mistakes happen very frequently in the demo btw...

I take it you arranged that one yourself? My quickstart always sends me to Belgium.
Have to stress that I only play that offensively at home. Play shortest passing, slowest tempo, and narrowest width too. LIVING LIFE ON THE EDGE

| I did yes, I hate only playing away games against poor opposition during pre-season so I cancelled two preset friendlies and arranged to meet Ajax and Sevilla at home before kicking off the season.
I will follow you tactics threads with great interest after the game is patched. I've been more of a micro management tactician before, but I'll give your team mentality approach a go.

Using narrow width too as I feel the description of "wide" is misleading- the '07 manual suggests that wide brings the full-backs forward more, whereas they seem to get forward when playing narrow too. It simply looks more like Arsenal narrow, HLeb/Rosicky dropping infield constantly, as irl.
I might try ditching cesc as PM.
I have certainly found that playing narrower helps the fb come forward. I also move the arrows to the sc'c for the wingers so they cut in. I experiamented yesterday adding small arrow forward on the fb and they seem to be getting forward much better added crosses often to them as well and its working a treat. arrows on fb definately seem the way in this version for attacing formations.
You use high or low tempo?

I agree with you Arsenal71. I was curious about what Asmodeous has outlined here and thought to myself, surely a universal team innstruction can't work.
However I was well and truly wrong coz I implemented ALL of what he said above into an Arsenal game I started purely out of curiosity and although I have only won the first friendly, it was 8 nil to me and it could have been about 20. This formula although very simple seems to get the most Arsenal-like play I've ever seen in FM.
It seems to me that in this version of FM the way to go may be a universal team mentality at home and a split mentality away in order to defend as well as create chances. I've tried to create tactics in the demo so far with my Real Madrid side which follow the rule of two theorems and also give key pleyers their own instructions but without any success. Players constantly seem to get in each others way.
I believe the model Asmodeous outlines could be applied to most teams as long as they have skillful wingers and a skillful forward and edited slightly to fit in specific players. The hard part will be to design both an away tactic and a neutral tactic (For finals etc) for your team in my opinion.

How is RVP doing in your games? I've given him 8 starts, he has 1 goal 1 assist I'm confused as how best to set him up.
Also, do you guys set Hleb and Rosicky as AMC with arrows going outwards? I worked for me in 07, haven't tried in 08. I bought Van Der Vaart and without him my team would be truly awful.

| You could try that with high width too, so the strikers drift into the channels with Hleb/Rosicky taking their place in the box while the full-backs overlap.
Toyed with both but have settled with low. Might up it occasionally if I'm looking for a goal. Quote:

True, I find that adapting the team mentality and defensive line depending on how the opposition have deployed themselves. Quote:

| I've found a team mentality approach to be really succesful in '07, and thus far in the '08 demo too (although obviously the closing down problem might affect it further when fixed). I find it the quickest and most efficient way of dominating possession (not so much in the demo but I've been reliably informed that this may be due to the closing down issue).
I approach away games differently but I'm loath to elaborate on that as the new game approaches as it might be rendered obselete.
