Catenaccio is a tactic in with an emphasis on defence, it's a highly organized and effective backline defense which is intended to prevent goals
It has 4 fixed defenders, playing a man-to-man marking system, plus a playmaker in the middle of the field who plays the ball together with two midfield wings
Some variations include 4-4-1 ,4-3-2 and 3-3-3 formations
The key innovation of catenaccio was the introduction of the role of a sweeper,
The sweeper's role was to recover loose balls, nullify the opponent's striker and double mark when necessary,
Another important innovation was the counter-attack, mainly based on long passes from the defence
Four man-marking defenders are tightly assigned to each opposing attacker while an extra sweeper would pick up any loose ball that escaped the coverage of the defenders
It was the Inter ilan tactic of the 60s. It focuses on defence and was brought to Inter, with success, by Herrara. It was used to gring 1-0s in League games. There are variations of it, but generally the formation can be described as a 5-4-1. Herrera utilized his 5 man defence by have the 4 players man-mark, with a sweeper behind them to clear up the mess. Catenaccio of that era has generally been abandonned because of the weakness it is suscectable from if pressured constantly by a fluid attack, and also down to a lot of team employing offside traps. You could also point to the disappearance of sweepers from the game as a reason. When a team suffers a sending off, somemay try a kind of Catenaccio, albeit without that sweeper, or without one of the stoppers.
The fundamentals Herrera went by, were that attack should be quick and direct, with the ball in the opposition box after 3/4 passes at most. He said something lik, "Lose the ball laterally and you have a problem, but lose it vertically and you can recover."
So as you can assume, you want direct play, a deep defence and probably a very high tempo. You want incredibly quick players higher up the pitch, in particular the wingers and the striker, so that they get forward quickly. You'll also need exceptional passers of the ball, the sweeper should be able to spot a 40-yarder, and your midfield will likely have that duty too.
