Frank sent me to Austria, so I loaded up “Wiki-defined” Central Europe; all leagues from Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland. Completely unknown territory for me as I’ve never managed out of the UK on FM.

I thought that Frank was going easy on me, as it seems Admira Wacker were a fairly large club and I‘d heard of them, but I didn’t question his judgement. We started off relatively poorly, taking a while to get out of the blocks. Things started to pick up until I suffered the embarrassment of being knocked out of the Cup by my reserve team. Then we started a dismal run during which I received the dreaded vote of confidence every week. Surpringly, I was also offered a 2 year extension during the confidence voting which I signed, that seemed to spur the players onto a mini surge where we finished in the lofty position of 8th. Bizarrely, we won the Underperformer award(!)

Promotion candidates the previous season, relegation candidates for this one. We showed true form too, flirting with the relegation zone for 2/3 of the season. Then bizarrely we proceeded to win 9 out of the last 12 games, a win on the final day would have put us 2nd but it wasn’t to be. The cup sucked spectacular ass. I’m enjoying the Austrian league, it’s very quirky, for example teams play each other 3 times a season, and not 2 or 4. It just depends on which Admira Wacker team show up next season for me to carry on enjoying it. During the summer, the board set up a link with French club Nantes as a parent team. My 22yo Austrian AM/FC has the highest average rating of the league with 7.45 and I pick up both the Worst and the runner up Worst Signing of the Season for my 29yo Austrian GK and 26yo Spanish AMR respectively.

It was the underperforming team that kicked the season off in our sluggish way. We were stuck in the relegation zone and I couldn’t buy a decent result at all. Our lack of depth showed as well and in February the board issued me an ultimatum, which I declined. I lasted 3 more games, winning two and losing 0-1 against the side bottom of the league with 2 points from 20 games. It took a month before I was hired again.

I was given a short term contract until the end of the season with one aim - Avoid relegation. There was no transfer budget and I was £5k over the wage bill. It didn’t happen. Winning 2 and losing 3 meant we were sent down on the final day of the season. I was sacked and this time had to wait until the next season to be rehired.
