This all seems rather deep and meaningful.
I send out my scouts to look for players. If i havent got a scout then i try get one... or two. And then send them out. Ive had 08 a couple of days now and this strategy seems to work for me. Funnily enough.
Im managing Maidenhead. They didnt have a scout.... so i got one or two. And they found a few players better than my current ones. Which always helps.

I had a bit of a scare on finding Nueva Chicago had no scouts, put an ad in the jobbie and first pass came back with no applicants.
Continued the ad and got 11 applicants at second time of asking, one of whom appeared to have a passing knowledge of football.

I suppose it looks ok the scouting... at first take. I've got to October and got some new blokes in... all realistic. Apart from the MR who is dire extraordinaire, even for this level. FM07 scouting went a bit funny after one patch. This is better.

I'm wondering if the relative reputation of clubs has more to do with it than it did in 07. I can't remember who Jimbo was managing in his demo save when he hit the no applicants problem, but it could be that it's playing in the bum end of Sweden rather than the (relatively) high rep of the Argentinian second tier or the database entry-heavy UK that's caused it for me.
And the job centre on that save of mine had seen no applicants for scout well into October (the last time I remember checking it) after placing the ad at the start of the game in July. Using staff search with the ass man filtering unrealistic candidates, there were a lot of unemployed scouts of reps up to National, willing to sign for the club, so it's not as though Brage were terrible pariahs.
I'll start afresh with another set of leagues and see if the same issues happen again. Hmm...

Jimbo was managing Barrow, I started a save with them to check and while they started scoutless I got 8 applicants to the ad first time.

Playing as Pro Vercelli - who must be higher rep than the mighty Brage - and placing the job ad at game start (13/7) I had no applicants at the first time of asking on 29/7, but a string of them at the second time on 11/8, which is certainly a better record than before. The record for the AI teams in Scotland (the only league of those four running in this second game) is roughly similar to the previous save.
The inconsistent player reports are still happening in the same way as before, so that's not just confined to the one save.

With a quick check with Barrow, though, I've managed the same trick as Jimbo. Into November and still no applicants. Which, regardless, I think satisfies my inner statistician. And so to sleep!

Started up in Poland and picked up two scouts through the job search. Anyone know why the majority of polish scouts seem to have extensive knowledge of Nigeria and Brazil amongst the more regular nations :S.
