The way I've been taught is if your scout hasn't found them, they aren't to be found. Unless a player is offered to you (and scouted subsequently), then what the scouts give you is the only option for me.

Player search is always a no-no, emergency or not because IRL you wouldn't be able to access a similar facility, whether you've no fit goalkeepers or not.

Scouring other teams squads is also a no-no as to be looking, you would have to know what you are looking for.

If you've no scouts, (like me right now), you are stuck with what you've got till you find a scout!

When I do have scouts using the player-search is an absolute no-no.
Even for loan players I depend on the players my scout(s) have found. Although I don't say no if a player on loan is offered to my club. Obviously the other club found my little club and I'm okay with it. If the player sucks, well he's returned, if he doesn't, it's an unexpected benefit. Aye, I'm scrupulous

For situations where one is without a scout I might tolerate the search screen for searching for players on loan but only in cases of a very thin squad (below 11)

It doesn't exist in my game.
If I have 22 legs available I play, I've never been unable to field 11 players so I don't know if FM would do the correct thing.

Wedges have thin ends which should never be inserted in parts of LLM.

I think I'd still avoid using the player search screen until all options have been exhausted, I'm surprised that the staff search option hasn't been mentioned.

Surely that should be the first port of call should you be unable to find any applicants via the job centre.

Personally I think it is acceptable to use the player search BUT only in an emergency

As IRL the PFA run a free internet database of all their members who are currently unattached and looking for a club

You can get a reasonable idea of their ability through websites such as soccerbase

Also their is a who's who type book produced annually for players at football league clubs and for non league clubs down to step 5

What would constitute a crisis?

Most team have a good sized squad from the start plus a few reserves, the kids & not to mention any grey's.

It would take an extremely crowded treatment room before you've ran out of players already on the books. If you are short on options because you'd released a load of players from the start or failed to secure new contracts for the following season than I'm afraid that is just poor management & you should reap what you've sown.
