I need to remove the text ?Do The Dog Music?, so the image is just the dog sitting on a record. It would probably look good with a hole in the middle too, maybe something like one of the letter ?o??s in the word ?Dog?
I?ve tried all sorts of methods using selection tools, magic wands, layers etc, (I?d rather avoid freehand!) but can?t get it looking that great. The closest I?ve got to success is filling in the letters with black, and using selections I made using the magic wand, to mask (not using mask tools/layers though!) around the parts I don?t want, merging the layers and deleting the selection.
I'm probably doing it all wrong, below is how/what I've done so far:
FYI I?m probably a fairly moderate user of Photoshop, no expert, but generally know my way around it. I don?t get the layer mask concept yet though, and I have feeling it might play a part in achieving this!
BTW it doesn?t have to be an immaculate edit, as the image is only going to be around 32x32px, (an icon).

You shouldn't be trying to fix the circular shapes when it's easier to create them yourself. All you need is two similar shapes which you create with the shape tool, one of which is slightly smaller and has a white adjustment layer stroke attached to it.
Double click on your original image to unlock the layer and move the image to the top of your layers palette and add a layer mask to hide all the parts you don't need.
Masks are not all that hard; you paint with black on the mask to hide specific areas, white does the opposite.
Add a layer at the bottom and fill it with white or add a solid color layer.
exactly as Gaussian says. You are creating un neccessary work for yourself when a simple remake will work better.
I'm only adding to this thread because the same thing applies to so many other requests for help. A common question here is, "How do I do this ['the hard way']? If you take time and look for the easier way, it will usually present itself.
The reason why many beginners don?t see those solutions is because they?ve never taken some serious time to at least know which tools Photoshop has to offer and how to do use them for basic things, which makes it very hard for them to find better solutions.
