In the managers options I have set youth team contract renewals to NOT be set by the coach/ass man yet everytime a player turns 17 they sign a new contract for about 2 years.
I wouldn't mind a coming-of-age contract if it was for a year but I have no need for these players to be given 2 year contracts. If you bear in mind that I am playing as Dorchester and that the majority of these young players are such utter crap that they don't warrant long contracts then it all makes it more agonising.
At the end of the day it does 2 major things:
Firstly, if I decide, at the end of the season, that they do not warrant another year in the youth then I have to pay out their contract to release them.
Secondly, it adds sometimes significant amounts of money to a wage budget I want to keep down.
Maybe I am reading the whole youth contracts situation wrongly. Maybe I can't stop 17 year olds being offered a contract. If I can't could the game make it just 1 year?
Perhaps people didn't follow what I was saying...thought I'd get a reply
Essentially I like to set youth contracts myself rather than my youth coaches handing out contracts to every single player that joins the youth setup. I find they never get rid of players who just won't make the grade.
If I take control of giving them contracts myself then I just don't give contracts to players I don't rate, they stay on youth contracts and I can release them for cheaper.
So why, when I untick the 'let coaches/assman handle youth contracts' do they still give contracts to youth players when they turn 17?
Is it that the game will give contracts to 17 year olds anyway or because something is bugged?
Ok just happened to do the sensible thing and searched the bugs forum. Seems there is a known issue with this. I'll have to see if I have a save game and add my input there.

Could it be a pre-contract offered by a previous manager?
I don't believe I have offered any pre-contracts either. I have seen messages for pre-contracts but can't remember who atm.
I'm only just at the start of the second season so not sure if it could be a previous manager or not.
Like avstwentyone says, this is a crippler if players are earning up to £95 a week.
