I was amazed to find that my team that finished in 5th 20 odd points behind champions had players voted 1st and 2nd in the players player of the year award. Not sure if the rest of the team are really terrible or if this just confirms that players really are stupid.

I don't think you have to win the league to receive a player of the year award.

As long as they play well (+ score goals), there's no discrimination which teams they are from.
You should be happy that you could make them play consistently well throughout the season.

The week I just finished on my game we played two games. One of my strikers scored 4 goals in one of them and got a 10. Followed up with a not so impressive 7 but atleast he scored in that game aswell. My other striker on the other hand was the guy that got into the team of the week.
