I just saved Vauxhall from relegation in first season and found a few uncontracted gems. From a football point of view, things are good but the bank balance is looking not so good and the board is starting to get on my tail about it.
I've just about eliminated appearance bonuses from my new contracts (in place of higher goal bonuses) and overall, my wage budget is about 70% of what they tell me. By small team standards, its expensive to open the ground and my attendance isn't that good and I think thats whats hurting me. I've even scheduled full reserve and U18 friendlies.
Is there anything else im missing other than "win, and butts will be in the seats"?
I cant say there's a lot you can do really. Trim your squad to its bare minimum. Get rid of as many young players as you can and hope for a few decent cup draws to make a bit of money.
The only real game I've had in LLM was with Tiverton Town (promoted to BSS after the 07/08 season). I managed to get into the playoffs in the 2 years I was in charge before getting the Notts County job in league 2. Over those two years we managed to turn over a huge profit of £200k. Although I didn't get them promoted I left them in a healthy state.
I guess the reason I was financially successful was because I didn't really have more than about 11 senior players, relying mostly on loan signings from my parent club Plymouth, never paying a penny in wages. That might be your best approach as you can get better players than your rivals without having to pay anything.
I've even scheduled full reserve and U18 friendlies.
Who against? Is it just against British teams? I arrange friendlies with Arrau (sp?) and Academica and pull in around £16K per game - matches against Spanish B & C teams can generate 7K against your 1st team and 3K against your reserves (sometimes only agree to friendlies in 2nd season). Also lower Scottish teams like Falkirk (sorry Falkirk fans) can generate 12k
Seriously there's probably not a lot you can do about it other than keep your wage bill as far as you can below budget, as others have said. That should at least keep the debt under some sort of control. A spectacular cup run would help of course, but apart from that, just keep the results on an upward curve and the board will probably forgive you the debt.
Then, after a few seasons of improving results, especially a promotion, the financial position should start to improve too. The board still won't be grateful but at least they might start giving you a little less grief over it.
It does seem you can make quick money by inviting foreign teams over for reserve friendlies - but to me it's exploiting a loophole rather than a valid strategy and I won't do it. That's just me though, you can make your own mind up about that.
I was in the same situation, however I found after winning several games my attendance grew (especially when I got promoted) so that played a big part. What also helped was arranging friendlies with large clubs, having a small squad etc. Apart from that, there isn't much you can do.

It is a loophole - you're right - I only arrange 2 friendlies each pre season against these teams
If you don't have one already try and get yourself a parent club and loan players off them for no wages, helped me no end in the BSS with King's Lynn, always made money.
If your not bothered about keeping things realistic like a lot of people are then arranging friendlies is the way to make money. On my first game with Worksop I arranged a friendly cup with barca/real/athletico B teams and made 150K +.
