Sounds like your using the wrong size pictures, make sure there 95x95 and not the large players pictures.

Ive been having problems for ages getting new kits to show during my games and you haved solved.

I'm trying hard to get backgrounds to work with RS-5 skin, but nothing comes up.

I've created a folder called backgrounds in cDocuments and Settings\<my user>\My Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2007\graphics\

In backgrounds folder there is a england folder which contains stadium picsture and then a config.xml.

skin cache is ticked off.
always reload skin on confirm is ticked on.

I've tried with other skins aswell:
Flexion: not working
Inverno: not working

so what am I doing wrong?

I don't really use background, but do everything you've done just make sure you also tick the show background picture check box then reload the skin, that (fingers crossed) should do it.

Do you know the shield thats there for premier league clubs in England, how can i change that? Which folder do i put the logos into/?

Glad it helped, makes the game look 100% better, but you'll soon start getting addicted and enough graphics just isn't enough
