I was scratching my head and downloading various different tactics for a while, none of which seemed to work for myself, or worked within a limited margin of success. I've been playing the FM series for a while and have never before managed to tackle actually creating a working tactic for myself. This time I bothered.
I've made a tactic basically centered around my team. I mean literally, everything is customised for my regular first team players, but does work when they're not available (just had 4 missing and still beat Man U 3-2).
I thought I'd share this for people to use and testing purposes, just incase anyone out there can refine it a little more.
Basically it's a 4-1-3-1-1. The DM pulls back to become an extra defender when possession is lost, at the same time the CM pulls back to be a DM. When the team has possession the left and right CM move to AM positions sided respectively. As below.
I HAVEN'T used this all season, for about 70% of the season I've done however and it's kept me nicely within top of the league. Infact I'm only 3 points from top (been there all season somehow) and I have a game in hand!
The AMC role is pretty important. Someone quick with good goal scoring potential, I've retrained (mostly) Craig Bellamy to fullfil that role.
I find typically most of the goals come from the CM L/R. AMC and FC, so it's rather important to make sure those players are decent at scoring and such.
Set-pieces have been set up for my team, which varies a little from normal so you may want to have a look at it. Basically the defenders with the weakest heading skills stay back at corners (2 of them), the rest forward. The AMC goes for a near post flick on (because Bellamy can't header). If your AMC if decent at heading/jumping you may want to change his stance.
It's basically a defensive, slow tempo tactic that seems to be doing pretty well so far. As a note, of late I've had a lot of 0-0 draws, but I've had some big injury and discipline problems of late. I'd say either could be a problem with the tactic but I'm West Ham and most of the players are half injury prone or rebelious as hell!
