This is a tactic I am using very successfully for my West Ham side in season 1. I originally made it for an Aston Villa game, centered around Matias Fernandez. He was amazing with this tactic, unfortunately I was unable to sign him as West Ham but I did get van der Vaart instead. Hes not the nucleus that Matias was but the tactic itself is still bringing amazing results. I'm probably starting a new game but wanted to post this tactic to help anyone struggling with 8.0.1.
My West Ham squad is pretty large, I sold most of the notable West Ham players at the start and brought in several free transfers and a couple pricey signings. The one attribute I look for more than anything is acc/pace, I usually don't play any player, DC or otherwise, with an acc/pace below 13 and usually no wingers or strikers below 15.
I rotated players in the midfield quite often, even van der Vaart would have been replaced by a spectacular sub from River, Diego Buonanotte, but Diego only has stamina of 3..though we've managed to raise it to 5 through training so far heh. Never the less he is without a doubt the best off the bench midfielder I have ever had and would encourage anyone to pay the 35k euro transfer fee to get him as a sub for this tactic.
The goals are pretty spread about, top scorers being Palacio with 10 in 14 apps, Vaart with 7 in 14(3), Mazilu with 8 in 12(4), Eddie Johnson 5 in 6(14).
Defenders
Basic back 4, the fullbacks don't get into the attacks that often and usually follow the wingers waiting for a back pass and then apply a through ball back to the winger.
The defense might have higher closing down that some people are used to. I simply find that if they apply pressure quickly then the opposition more often than not makes a bad pass or a long shot.
Midfielders
The defensive midfielder is important in keeping controlling the middle of the pitch, I used Jean II Makoun and Jeremy Clement there. They do get involved in the attack often outside the box, Makoun especially with 3 game winners so far.
The wingers need to have pace and good dribbling ability. Ljungberg doesn't do much in the match engine for me but he always gets good ratings and won player of the month for 3 consecutive. Jeremy Menez on the other hand is excellent in the match engine and takes the ball quickly past a defense and gets a through ball to get a one on one for a forward at least twice every match.
The attacking midfielder is best suited for a player like Matias Fernandez who can double as an AMC and forward but Vaart has done great there and so has Menez, Diego Buonaotte, Dyer, and even during an injury crisis I had to play Eddie Johnson and Lee Bowyer there and both did well considering.
Forwards
No matter who you put here these are the 2 guys that are going to get things done. They will pass more than forwards do in other tactics I have used. They need to have at least 15 acc/pace, I would say minimum of 17 in order to beat defenders and thread a defense. Speed alone doesn't do it though, they need to have good dribbling. I notice a huge difference when playing Palacio (20acc, 18pace, 17drib, 13fin, 14first touch) compared to Ionut Mazilu (17acc, 14pace, 15drib, 20fin, 13first touch). Palacio will skin a defender in a heartbeat and gets one on ones often, Mazilu on the other hand will often roam the perimeter and finish from distance.
As for the playmaker, I would make it who you want to have the ball the most often in your midfield. I had my playmakers list consisting of van der Vaart and Jeremy Menez. For my Aston Villa side I had it as Matias Fernandez and Quaresma. Results
Keep in mind that the Carling Cup fixtures I was playing with only 1 or 2 starters, the rest was youngters, reserve players or players coming back from injury.
kopenhag - want to say why it's so bad, or what the results actually were when you were using and with what team/league, etc. Might be more helpful than just slagging it without backing up your arguments.
I tried this tactic for about 15 games with Brighton & Hove Albion. Started off very very well with two 4-1 and three 5-1 victories. BUT, after around eight games everything went tits up. I notice players are all over the pitch with this tactic, and, after an injury crisis before I took over, I was left with a small squad. Brighton aren't exactly the fittest of sides and I could almost see the 2D pieces getting knackered. So, if you're going to use this in a lower league I believe you would need to change the tactic, I think something would need to change in order to make it work in the LT in a lower league.

I haven't tried it in the lower leagues but I did use it for my U18 side (yes I manage my youth squad ) For them all I did was move defensive line up and lowered closing down and width a bit. If your playing on a wide field I would lower it even more for a lower league side. Closing down is whats tiring your players out, lower it to what you normally play with it set at.
Hey, I am a big fan of the dimond 4-4-2, and I realy hope your tactic will work good with my Newcastle team, do you think Newcastle good enough for this tactic?
I will report back after 3 seasons
well, lets just make it 15 matches.
I think Newcastle would do fine with it if you have a good AMC that you signed. Alan Smith might actually do very good in that role though. And of course as long as you know your right from your left then your 1 step ahead of Allardyce and you can actually play N'Zogbia on the left and Milner on the right.
