Hi guys, I used the 4-1-4-1 formation very successfully with Portsmouth.
It is a basically a flat back 4, a holding midfielder, a flat midfield and a lone striker, used as a target man.
The idea is to keep a tight defence and try and win games by the odd goal. Worked well.
I am now in an online game as spurs and thus far not doing so well. I am missing King, Dawson and Lennon, all key players to Spurs.
I am finding the opposition getting far too much time in midfield, despite this being the area I am trying to dominate.
I feel my closing down instructions may be the issue. I don't use "whole pitch" because I don't like my players going too far out of position leaving big gaps, but anything lower and they seem to back off just a bit too much and don't challenge until the last minute.
My DM is Makoun, who should be ideal for this tactic, with Jenas, Malbranque, Taino, Farfan in front of him(Lennon will most likely replace Jenas or Taino, not sure at this point)
This has dragged on a bit, I hope the info is enough that some one might have a good suggestion or 2
Could you not have the players infront of the DM player on higher closing down and the DM on lower. The idea being that the DM is there to sweep up anything that gets through.
I have no idea if this works as I've never tried it.
I leave the DM in his own area and the MC's closing down own half. Like I said it worked a treat before, maybe I don't have the personel to make it work. Might need another Makoun type player in MC. Can't afford to sacrafice too much going forward though or I'll never create any chances.
Maybe play a more defensive minded player in one of the normal MC slots. Huddlestone maybe? Or maybe try the MC to close down all over. Not on '20' but maybe something like 13-15?
An other thing, I'm not so sure Spurs are suited to that type of system. Maybe try something a bit more attacking. Or at least a solid 4-4-2?
