It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Development of the match engine (Pre patch)

Introduction
SI can’t win. Undemanding really, no matter what they do to improve the game no one is ever happy. We all know this, and some of you would expect nothing less. One of the features (of many, may I add) which we see regularly, and maybe we don’t notice it as much, but the match engine is always improving. Just to get one assumption clear before I start and bore you with mindless shot, that you don’t care about - this article is about tactics and the match engine solely, not my views on the new game.

Back to the progression of the match engine; the game is ever becoming more sophisticated we must evolve to suit around this - survival of the fittest if you will. As the game becomes more sophisticated, as must the way you manage your funds, transfer market, man management and most importantly your tactics.

Managing Your Funds & Managing the Transfer Market
Probably the least important factor/s you will need to consider, but consider them never the less. These are the least important factor/s because these are not revolutionized - despite features which may effect the way we use the transfer system and manage our budgets has been changed.

Don’t get me wrong in order to be a success, which is another assumption you may need to consider/agree with me; reading this you must agree to my philosophy of managing - to be a success and to be a success.

More on the way the game has revolutionized, and surprisingly despite early premonitions, which I alone did not have, the game has changed a considerable about for ’08. This really effects the four key stages of management, or four simple steps to success if you may. The change of budget option which has been included, makes it easier, more sophisticated , and more realistic, which is what we all want, right? There is another thing which needs to be considered - the type of manager you are, but managing the budgets and transfers is something which is really simple and basic to most managers, the development of man management and tactical awareness is more important, thus meaning there is nothing left to say. Clarifying, this his article is not one which is going to tell you things, tell you players, tell you how to manage your squad.

Tactical Designs
I was in two minds whether to put tactical design together with man management, but I am sure the connections between the two will be some what seamless. Back to the introduction, the match engine is ever evolving, and the only way to evolve with it is to pay attention to it and relate to the way it has evolved and role with it. One of things which was becoming ever more evident was the fact players where becoming ever more ‘****ed off’ with the game. It was ‘too hard’ and I am sorry to say, but the people whom where saying have clearly have not taken the time to reason with the game and discover the real reasons and the background for there failure.

As the match engine becomes more sophisticated it is able to cover up some floors it ones had. One of the most resent, to name a few was where you could put the corner to the edge of the box and have a free shot, unopposed. Because of the sophistication and the development of the new match engine, this is no longer possible. This in itself could be the major reason people were finding it difficult, but they can’t really on floors in the match engine for success, there stems another way you can work against the more sophisticated match engine for success.

When creating a tactic, it is far to common to see people creating one and using it for both home/away. Now this in itself is a basic floor. One tactic can not work for one club of a certain standard and then for another, despite whatever manager is using it, and whatever techniques you use to manage your budget and transfers. Using a multi-system of tactics which will change before each game, and in-game respectively is key in order to manipulate the match engine to any degree of accomplishment. All this is linked in with man management, which is a fundamental issue to attain any form of success.

Man Management
A key importance, good man management. One of the major powers of the four, along with tactical design which is of equal importance. Management - the act or manner of managing; handling, direction, and control. Handling, direction, and control. Handling; the way in which you handle your finances, media attention and other such things. Direction and control are more focused to tactics. Directing your tactics and team instructions in the correct manner has proven to get results. For instance, in relation to real life, there will never be a game in which the tactical instructions and ‘direction’ will be changed.

With the ever newer match engine aiming to bring realism and elements of real life into the game, we need to take elements of real life management in order to succeed. Changing tactics throughout is as key in Football Manager ‘08 as it is in real life, well at least it should be, considering the new engine has reached all its aims. A little tip/pointer you should have acquired from this is the importance of changing tactics and tweaking throughout a mach, considering certain circumstances.

Lastly, the aim of this was to familiarise you with the changes of the game. Obviously my aim was not to hand you things on a plate, as to many of us do that, and well, where is the fun? People who want that can get spoon feed elsewhere. Consider a part two, in which will involve the different types of management.

I just dont get it, it has nothing to do with realism that you tell 1 single player where to start his pressure - you do that for "units". Not single players..

I havent tried making a tactic on my own about a few thoughts in running around with. Perhaps you could shed some light..

Im thinking : I really wanted to make a tactic where the defenders used player instructions for more defensive play, but the rest of the team DIDNT used player instructions? Tried it?

I just like players to play like a unit. And i certainly dont think its realistic to do player instructions for when "x" player should start pressing for example. Thats just not realistic in my mind...
