I control Norwich in my fifth season now, promoted from the CC in the 3rd season - survived nicely so far. I spent my first years scouting Europe heavily, looking for young and cheap talent from Holland, France and Italy - mainly. I came up with a pair of solid backs - Dimitri Daeseleire from Belgium and Olivier ter Horst from Holland. They both perform well in the Premiership and were bought for around 100k and 150k in the second season. Now they're worth around 4M, and Daeseleire especially is a very solid wing-back who puts up 10-15 assists every season with his crosses. Hope this helps.
I find it hard to get solid players to come to Norwich from UK based teams, but Dutch and French players are usually more keen on joining my side.
No problem. You might have to scout and assess these players more thoroughly, as they may have randomised stats for every game, but I'd take a look at:
Denis Tonucci DC
Marius Alexe AML/FC(probably my best forward, excellent player)
Ilario Aloe AM RL (also an excellent winger - player of the year in 2013)
Adam Vass DM C(got him on free transfer, hard working DM)
Anthony Scribe GK (Marshall opted for a transfer in season two, too bad as he is a quality goalkeeper, but Scribe made up for it after a while - he struggled in his first season though. Now he's worth around 4M and doing well)
Eros Corradini GK (See Scribe)
Pavel Kalouda AMR (like Aloe, quick winger with some skill)
Sam Vokes (actually did very well for me in the Championship, vanished for two seasons in the PL, but returned a reborn player last season, scoring 10 goals in 18 games)
Those are just some of the players I still have on my team. As you can see, and as I mentioned, I scout the continent heavily - picking up young talent from clubs of a lower reputation than me, send them to my affiliates or use the reserve team to develop and tune them for the first team. I focus heavily on determination and work rate, apart from technical skills important to the position of the player.
Ask the board for more money occasionally, they'll grant it every now and then. Good luck
With the rather big gap in quality between the top teams (well, all teams) in the Premiership and the Championship players I had when I was promoted (after 3 seasons in the CC) I was very cautious about any expectations to stay up. I did devise a few new tactics that helped avoid the big defeats, especially away against the top 4 (among others)
When at home I played an offensive 442, with AMR and AML 'arrowed' into the strikers (but set to 'cross from byline') so they would add some pressure by coming from deep and possibly receiving passes from strikers holding up the ball or to receive through balls from the midfield.
Away I played, what proved to be a successful tactic, with a back-line of four (where the DCs were set to very defensive and 'closing down' to 'own area') I played with one DMC, set to defensive and few forward runs. Two CMs who played somewhat offensively, two attacking wingers (set like in the 442 tactic) and a single striker. Playing defensively, direct and quick football - with counter attacks I managed some good results against Chelsea (2-2 away) and wins against Bolton, Newcastle and a few others away. In the last two games of the season I beat Man U (away) 1-0 and Liverpool (home) 2-0 by alternating the tactics. I did go through the mid-season slump, but managed to pull through eventually.
