Other Moon, I believe that you'll find with bit/byte/etc. it's not 1000, it's 1024. Don't ask me why. Something to do with the way the coding works. I never really grasped it.

It goes like:

1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, etc. and I think it eventually hits 1024. Could be wrong though.

Unfortunately, this is incorrect, BluMoon.

A Megabyte really is a million bytes. The binary prefixes have a different name. (For example a Kibibyte would be 1024 bytes)

For further reference, check out the IEEE 1541-2002 that defines prefixes for binary multiples.

As for the original thread, I always only run leagues of a single country. That way, the savegame size doesn't increase that fast, enabling me to play longer careers.

What Cosmo said for the career games ^

Also, my best mate just built a monster of a PC especially to play FM08. Something along the lines of a 3.3ghz Quadcore, with 4gb of RAM.

He started off with every single league enabled. He said it was really quick to begin with, but started to slow drastically after about 2 seasons in. His save game was getting towards 2gb before he quit, as it was taking 10 minutes to process a weekend with matches. He ended up restarting with a respectable 50 leagues eventually!

So yeah. Running all the leagues isn't all that great for a career game

Yes, I think I will go for a more manageable selection: Malta, Andorra and San Marino, and maybe Portugal.

Problem found!

Without getting into a too long rant about my hatred for Vista, they have put in a lot more 'show' than is necessary. An operating system is supposed to take care of background processes, make sure they don't **** up for each other, and so forth, no present an Al Gore-like powerpoint show every time you do something.

So no wonder things are slower on Vista. You need 1 GB memory just to run Vista properly. Then add what you need for other background programs and FM. It's a piece of **** tbh.

Rant over

I've sometimes loaded up all the big leagues in Europe, but I've never ever managed in them, so I no longer saw the point. Could have added the top level just to see what's going on, but didn't bother this time as I hadn't planned to stick with the first save.

seamus raises a valid point

I disagree with your view that Vista is pure **** (it has some issues sure) but this isn't the place for such a discussion.

OK I'm 100% convinced that there is some sort of error with the beta patch that is slowing my machine down significantly.

I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400 processor and 4 gig of RAM and my game is now crawling along, it's using a huge amount more processor power than before.

Only options at the moment seem to be either grind it out, or re-install without the beta patch and put up with the issues.

Unhappy.
