How come there are new problems in the match engine every year?
What exactly do they do to it? It seems to me that this year's match engine is pretty similar to last year's and the year before that, yet there's a whole host of new problems with it. I had no problems with the match engine after the final patch in FM2007, so why did they feck around with it?
It seems to me that the best idea for SI would be to stop messing with the match engine and just concentrate on adding to other areas of the game.

I was just thinking that actually.
Year after year, we don't get many improvements to the match engine - only tweaks to (supposedly) make it better. Obviously more variation in the matches is nice, but when you look at the changes made in the grand scheme of things, there's not much progress.
Still, it's better than CM's.

Because the FM2007 match engine had a host of issues thats why they "fecked" with it.
Plus for all its issues the 08 version plays a better, multi-paced, more varied game of football.
The entire game revolves around the 90mins and its natural that SI will always want to improve it.

Programming the match engine is not as simple as it looks because for every change you make, it causes other factors to be affected. Who knows how many different variables are taken into account and if one is significantly altered, it can end up like dominoes having the whole thing crash down upon itself.

Gonna agree with you. Those who read how the programmers come up with the patch 8.0.1 will know. 1+2 do not always equal to 3 in programming.

800 is improvement on 702 but has flaws owing to new features.
800 Beta 1 tweaks some of this, but has an adverse effect on other aspects.
800 Beta 2 tweaks the aspects affected by 800 Beta 1 but still has flaws.
801 fixes the tweaks largely, but has an effect wherein too many 1on1's are created and an imbalance is caused wherein Strikers are less effective (slightly) and keepers are a too effective (slightly) which distorts the game over the course of a match.
802 will likely fx the 1on1 bug, but SI will only want to release that when they are sure the knock on effects do not distort another aspect of the engine.
