Is this based on anything? Or is it completely random? I'm sure they don't retain their PA as a player, otherwise all ex-players would become amazing scouts, coaches or managers, when IRL that isn't the case (Terry Butcher).

| Fairly random I think, although their reputation has an effect.
Maldini for example often makes a belting coach.

But by the time they have retired, their reputation is usually "local" anyway.

Their PA's pretty random I think but certain attributes thay had as a player can be carried over and help to shape how good they are as a coach, such as determination and ambition.
This may help explain why Maldini, despite probably getting a random PA once he's retired, usually goes onto be a good coach.
