Selecting a preset tactic from a list is not how I want to play. If I can't use my own tactic which I've put hours of thought in to, without stumbling in to these problems, then something is broken and it needs fixing by SI. It's as simple as that really.

I was thinking about the turmoil of the last months and was trying to find a solution. From discussions that involved many users and manufacturer's representatives it became clear that in matches between AI teams the shots, shots on target and goals were at levels similar to real football. On the other hand, human tactics produce double the shots. Thankfully, humans do not score many goals because the opponent goalkeeper becomes Hulk and the user's strikers become girls. For all of us who watch the games the situation is unbearable. What we are experiencing is players aiming the keeper, trying to kill him with a football. I've seen up to four conscutive shots by the same player on the goalkeeper; I thought it was a game of ping pong.

Agreed 100%: actually i thought about hockey (maybe they borrowed the game engine from their hockey game, just have a look at the total shots )

I couldnt agree more.
Im struggling in L2 after roaring through the Ryman leagues, but find my league position is the same regardless of the patch I use.
SI have stated many times that the match engine makes no distinction whatsoever between AI and human teams when playing out a match. It just takes the variables given (ie tactics, sliders, player stats) and calcs the ongoing results.
This fact leads to many saying 'its your tactics'. Which is true but doesnt equate to there not being a problem.
The problem more likely lies with the possible range values pushing things to an extreme which results in 'unrealistic' figures.
eg say setting some attacking scale has values of 1 for min and 10 for max, the AI has a range of 4 - 8 which it uses for tactics, which in turn results in mostly realistic match stats. But a human player comes along and pushes it up to 10, and does this across many sliders etc then we end up with 50 shots or whatever.
Ok thats a very simlpistic example but it does illustrate where the problem may lie, it could be just that SI gives us to much freedom to push values beyond which give 'realism'.
To those of you who don't want to use this technique because you feel it takes away the edge from the game and the challenge posed. I understand your argument, however, it annoys me that people say that just because they have put several hours into thinking of a tactic, it must work.
Whilst I know it is frustrating when you spend hours thinking and it doesn't work, whereas others are able to spend 2 minutes and they win the league with Derby you can't complain as it is obviously your own fault if you're losing.
Do you think that all of the people (myself included) who play the game without any of these problems managed to luckily buy a different game - a one without bugs?
No, so clearly if you are experiencing some of these problems it is YOUR fault, not the people who made the game.
Whilst I don't wish to make any unfair assumptions, I suspect many people have not read the tactics section of the manual. If something is not working in my game, I always revert back to there, in order to find out what I am doing wrong.
Although this may also be unfair, sometimes I think it is best not to spend too long making one, complicated tactic as If it fails you may be unsure as to what is letting you down with so many elements to account for. It is this reason why I myself achieve a fair bit of success playing with global - on everything.
This way it is easy to change something in the way you want, e.g. "We're losing and we need the ball" - Raise Closing Down. Or maybe, "Too many of the passes are negative" lets raise the mentality as the manual suggests.
As you can see, there is often an easy way to counter problems. The best way to see these problems coming is to practice and eventually through match-experience you will be able to determine what needs changing quicker, another reason why I suggest that you should spend less time thinking, and more time playing.
