I've started out taking over at Rochdale who were bottom of the league at the time but predicted midtable. I managed to keep them up but I'm being linked with a lot of jobs, such as Leeds and West Brom as apparently I'm a 'high profile manager' (ex-pro experience) and a few weeks after I took over I was asked to comment on the Preston job. I don't expect to stay at Rochdale forever as they have f$*£ all money and fans so with a bit of luck if I exceed expectations a bigger club might come in for me.

In my experience, you have to massively over-achieve to build reputation in such a short time. IMO, finishing 15th when you were predicted 24th is something of an achievement...but when you took over, what did you think your chances were in relation to the other sides? I've been predicted to come 18th before and was lauded for attaining 3rd, but tbh having looked at squads, other teams, etc I thought my side was vastly under-rated by the media. My reputation did increase, but only to local.
In other games, I came second when predicted first in German Regional Division South. I went into the next season as an unproven boss, and it took another 2 seasons before the reputation started creeping up.

I started unemployed and got a job with Bradford 15 games from the end of the season. They were in 13th place and I won 11 drew one and lost 3 of the remaining games only to lose in the playoff final.

Second season got promoted with Bradford into league one by winning automatic promotion. I got offered the Leeds united job but didnt take it and ended up finishing 9th in League one.

Started the third season with bradford and got 27 points from my first 10 games and so was offered the Plymouth job (bottom of championship). Went mad on a spending spree of just under 8 million pounds loaning 4 players (who scored 46 goals between them) and got promotion via the last playoff place.

Fourth season I finished 12th in the Prem after some quality young signings from abroad, Britain and former club.

Fifth season Finished 6th in the league winning the league cup and quarter finalists in uefa and F.A cups.

Just about to start my sixth season and just signed a new one year deal to be Plymouth boss next season despite job offers coming in from Pompey, Liverpool, Villareal, Fiorentina (think I may well take the Liverpool job) and my reputation is continental.

So I may not have started with the smallest club in the world but it is definately possible to work your way up the leagues!

i started out being manager at OFI Crete wich is a small unknown club and i applied for a place at PSV, Ajax and Twente, who are all alot bigger then OFI. Ajax and twente rejected me but suprisingly PSV hired me after a couple days with OFI and not having played a singe match

Well, who knows - Two games into season three with Farsley and I've won my first too tough games, we have a much younger and stronger squad this year with some quality young centre-backs on loan ... I think we'll do better this year - our team are really starting to click!
