Default maintaining transparency: creating a web shadowed border that fades into the bg

can someone please demonstrate the steps that are involved in creating this effect. it goes from a dark color to a transparent one that creates a nice shadow effect. it is the image that runs vertically down the containing div of this site.

example http://www.trhughes.com/

i know that many are probably tired of the shadowed web borders that many see on web sites, but well done, i personally like them. unfortunately, i am having a problem creating one. any help, tips or direction in replicating this effect are greatly appreciated. thank you.

i have also attached what i created. i used the foreground to transparent blending option, but i don't see any of my transparency or it fading out to the background.

Welcome 8))

There are many ways of doing this. You could use the gradient tool or add an outer glow layer style effect (black, blending mode of effect set to normal) to the layer you named middle.

thank you for the welcome and expeditious response. i have come across a number of photoshop communities, but i was blown away by the organization of this site and the insightful posts. in addition, thank you for your post. i will definitely give it a try.

by chance, do you know of a way to maintain a gradient going from the foreground color to a transparent color, whether it be on a border or other image. i am sure that you noticed that i used the gradient going out to the color of my web bg, but it still doesn't have the transparent look. the ending (where it should be transparent) ends abruptly.

this is something that i have been trying to figure out for a while and have always been unsuccessful in replication. that is why i ask. also, if you know of any other ways, to replicate this look, i am all eyes.

thanks again!

Select the gradient tool and click on the currenty selected gradient in your option bar, in this example going from black to white. Double click on it and a new window will open. Continue by selecting the gradient with the transparency, in this case the one with red (the current foreground color).

You can also change gradients in layers styles and adjustment layers by double clicking on the current gradient (2nd screenshot)
