Can anyone tell me if there is a quick key to turn a path into a selection without having to go to the path's palate????........

Welcome chomper 8))

There is no shortcut for this as far as I know, but you can easily make an action for it.
The attached action that I just created for you for example will convert any active path to a selection by pressing F10. Modify it to fit your needs.

You can also right click with the pen tool active and get a menu that contains, amoung others, Make Selection.
