Hello all, my name is Julie and I am new to photoshop - I have version 7.

My problem is that up to now I have happily been downsizing my photos useing the `save to web' option, thus reducing the pixels so that I can use them on my web site. However, something strange has suddenly happened when I use the save to web option and instead of being saved in the new smaller format, my pictures simply morph back to their origional size. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

After you resize in the Image Size tab, make sure you`re clicking "Apply".
Always start with the simple stuff, if that`s not it, we`ll try again.

Thanks for replying so promptly. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be as simple as that as I have carried out all the steps including clicking on `Apply' and it still won't save my images in any other format but photoshop. Do you have any other thoughts - have I inadvertently clicked on something somewhere that I shouldn't have?

Welcome Julie.

Just to make sure that we're talking about the same steps; have you done step 1,2,3 and 4 in the sequence as shown in my attachment?
Important is that you do step 4 (apply), because without clicking this button it won't resize the image when you click on save. You will notice when you click on apply that the preview on the left will resize too. Does that happen on your computer too if you enter the new values and click on apply?

Photoshop will ask once you click on "save" in which directory you want to save your file. When you later look at the file and notice that it's still the original size and not resized, aren't you then by accident looking at a file with the same name, but in a different directory? It's just that I have to be sure that you're doing everything right, even the obvious things. It's because I find it so strange that it doesn't work.

I don't understand this part Julie. Earlier you said that it wouldn't resize, but now you're saying something completely different.

Yes I am doing all of the steps you show. I have checked that I am not saving in another folder or anything similar to that. Previously when I have used `save to the web' the pictures have reduced in size on my screen immediately when I click save and I can then work on them - I don't have to go looking for them or anything like that in another file.

Ok I will try and explain again.

I open the picture I want to resize for the web. I change my pixels to the size I require and click on `Apply'. Next I select the format i.e. JPG. GIF, etc. Then I click on `Save'. Previous to this problem my picture would stay on the screen for me to continue working on it in the new format. Now the picture morphs back to its previous state. i.e. the picture goes back to the origional size and format and is not saved in the state I requested for the web.

Does this make sense?

Julie, I think you misunderstand the resize function in the Save For Web window. All it does is save the image with the name, format and size that you have entered at #2 (or additional settings). It does not resize the original image in your document Window.
To resize the image in your document window, you have to go to the menu and select Image / Image Size....

One point to mention though; if you open an image with a web format (jpeg,png,bmp,gif) and resize it in Save for Web and save it under the same name and same extension, then you're overwriting the current file that is opened in your document window. Photoshop however will still show the original size unles you close and reopen the same file, which is a bug.
