Default Chelsea Problems Still Not Addressed

With the signing of Sidwell, Pizarro and the impending Alex, it's a fair trio - but nothing to get exciting about. I mean, Sidwell interests me, I'd like to see if he can use his energy and combatism in the same way as Essien. Pizarro looks to me like a non-starter, just for backup competition and Alex is a tough nut but I don't think the manager will drop Carvalho.

Essentially, these three have added to the backup, that old 'strength in depth' moto. However, in truth, did we ever really have a problem with depth? Not really, is the answer. Okay, we needed a decent backup defender but that was about it. The reason we failed last season wasn't because we didn't have good backup players, it was because we had poor attacking tactics and endured poor form from attacking players. Of course the Terry/Cech injuries played a big part but we struggled to score in games where Man Utd did.

Therefore, the problem that Jose and Chelsea should be trying to address isn't beefing up the bench - which undoubtedly is the idea with this latest trio - but concentrating on how to get Chelsea playing better football. They should be looking at getting more pace and one touch passing, a plan B to the plan punt-to-Drogba because if he gets injured, it will be far more devestating that JT or Cech missing a spell!

Okay, so we have players leaving for the African Cup, so we DO need some backup but the fact remains that Chelsea's crucial crutch has not been addressed (so far) and this worries me. Man Utd are going to be stronger next year, Liverpool too and Arsenal will not perform as poor as they did last season so Chelsea have to rebuild and strengthen wisely.

I'm hoping to see Chelsea pick up a striker with some zip and a right back who can match Ashley Cole on the other flank - Ferreira is mediocre - Alves/Richards would be ideal as long as we didn't get ripped off. We may be spending pennies this summer but we can't afford to let our priorities slip.

Chelsea isnt going to be attacking football anytime soon, atleast until chelsea replaces Jose with somebody with an attacking way of playing.

Both Jose and Rafa are boring managers, as long as they remain the two teams are going to play the boring stuff we have become used to.
