I have a topograpic map that I want to create a transperency. I have scanned then map and am trying to remove everything except the roads and topograpic lines. I am basically familiar with photoshop.

More info might draw more helpful responses. What else is there to be removed ?Is it a large map ?Can we see it ?
In any event, sounds like a major project involving alot of tracing with the pen tool.

Or careful selections, using select>color range, maybe? seeing an extract of the map might help us help you!

This was just a quickie using the magic wand at a setting of 10, and about 5 passes.
A little more time and care will produce a cleaner result.
