http://realityslip.com/ How is this graphic made that is in the background. Specifically the orange thing that looks like a wire that wraps around. Is this 3d then fixed with photoshop?

Exactly.
Made in 3D, post processed in PS.

I don't neccessarily agree, in this case, that it was created in a 3D app. I see nothing that couldn't be
done in PS, with a little work. Here's an image that I did in about 1/2 hr. I believe I could do the "wire"
on that site guite easily. I'll do one and give instructions

mmm... no now i'd have to disagree.

I saw a tute on creating a similar effect, from the guy that runs the "Pank Pages", "Xtreme Pixels", and "TeamPhotoshop" site... but that was ions ago and i can't find it anymore. Besides, his effect was simple - i.e. didn't have all those twists in it.

I'm not saying a reasonable 'facsimilie' couldn't be created with PS (with a fair bit'o work). I'm just saying in this case those particular 'tubes'/'cables' were most likely done in 3D given the design of the rest of the background.

I'd be interested in seeing anyone's stab at this effect.

Aside from that though the rest of that background was indeed created in 3D, then embellished in PS.

You're more than likely right, now that I look at it closer and longer. But I believe one can come pretty close to the overall look in photoshop if one knows how to pick his (her) elements. I want to give it a shot (just as an exercize) I'll post it here. Wish me luck?

Of course! Good Luck ron!

I agree... as i said, the guy from PankPages got almost exactly the same look -- even the orange colour, was exact. Except he had no twists or anything 'dimensional' in character other than a normal 3D depth look. But so far as the highlights/shading/colours... they were exactly the same. He did his though long before this othetr fella did.

I'm going to post something tomorrow that I think you'll find interesting. It has to do with 3D in Photoshop and the value of 'pre-planning'. I purchased a 4" dia. chrome ball. It cost $9.95. When needing a chromy look, I set up the ball and light it, arrange reflections, filters etc. that will work with whatever I'm doing (you can make a print of the background of the piece your doing and reflect it of the ball) Then I break out the handy digital camera, shoot and bring it into PS, creating either a pattern or texture of it. Or condence it, stretch it and / or apply filters to it and make it do anything you want, all with that great psuedo 3d look to it. The spectaculars are great, elongated reflections are very realistic. I think you'll like the effect. It doesn't look 'PHOTOSHOPY'. [honesty]
