Wendy was the resident glass sphere expert (amongst other areas of expertise). Regrettably her past posts are no longer available.
Humble suggestion:
Because it's a clear glass sphere, use something like: http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorial/Glass-ball/7888
And then just try a bit of spherize and soft drop shadow effects for the image you add underneath all the "sphere" layers. Some blurry masking (copying the image layer and Gaussian blurring it with a mask applied so that the blurring becomes gradually more visible to the edges) might also add something to the realism perhaps.

I think Wendy's expertise was developed through the understanding of displacement maps. In fact, it may be that her original inspiration came from this tutorial which was on the Guru's Network for a long time and now is hosted at... http://www.thegoldenmean.com/technique/displace8.html | |

(well over a year)
It IS however still around.
Here's a list of threads from the "Photoshop general" board i searched out: http://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum/...action=search2
I believe this list of discussions will help you out digitalmistake. Quote: |

The first link in that list is the original thread (well over a year old). But that link starts on page 9. Be sure to "back read" to cover the whole topic.
And Welles, that tute link you posted... that technique is from the "Photoshop 4 WOW Book". Shows you how long that page has been around; despite what the canned "time & date" script shows at the bottom.
