Pen Tool to create the shape,then convert path to selection to stylize.

Hiya Omnium_Gatherum and how's Palliser doing these days?
Anyway, you say that you have a nice shape already? nitrobutler is right that a shape like that is easily created with the Pen tool. However, once you have the shape, how to get the shading?
I'm not exactly positive how that person did it. Perhaps it was painted by a skilled hand and a Wacom tablet.
The highlighting and shadow work could have been done with the Dodge and Burn tools, using feathered selections to constrain the effects to the specific areas desired.
I'm nearly positive that it wasn't created using styles as the shading is too uneven.
Try experimenting by creating your shape filled with color and using the Dodge Tool to create the highlight and the Burn tool to create the shadows. That might get a good result fairly simply.

If I were doing it I wouldn't use the dodge and burn tools. I would make the shapes of the highlights and shadows then blur them and mess with different blend modes. For the base of the shape I would use layer styles though. Here's a quicky that I did and the layer style I used.

Looks great, p?tr??k. [righton]
My initial suggestion was based on the observation that in the original image the shading was rather irregular so it seemed to me it had to be done by hand.

I agree. The original was shaded by hand but I love what you did, patrick. :}
I am having trouble understanding Omnium_Gatherum's question. Does he want to know how to make the blue shape or does he want to know how to make the whole piece? |

Thanks, Moth.
The orig was probably done by hand, but for me to do it that way, I think I would end up buying a new keyboard because the crtl, alt, and z key would have worn out. [confused] And as I said before, It was a quicky, so there plenty room for improvment.

Here's a quicky take on the stripe. Basically, I started everything as a bunch of rectangles, shaded on one side, highlighted on the other. Then I tranformed/perpespective to make one end smaller than the other. I rotated the canvas then applied distort/ shear. I rotated the canvas back. After that it was airbrush and blur. I then copied/merged a new layer then set the blend mode to soft light to add contast. Not the best work I've posted here but it shows what I think was done to make the original.
