Right, so my housemate who was responsible for paying the bills left at the weekend, so now it's my job - what do I do?

She cancelled her direct debits on council tax, water, electricty (npower) and gas (British Gas) and apparently told all concerned about the situation.

Yorkshire Water have sent me a form to fill in and I've emailed the others asking for advice - is there anything else I need to do?

as long as you have all the revelant account information, setting up Direct Debits is a piece of ****, If you can arrange the day the payment is made, try and arrange it for the day after you get paid, thats the only DD advice I have!

I've got bills with account numbers on - I wasn't sure if the account was with the person or for the house as a whole.

The task of paying bills in shared accomodation is a right pain in the arse. I'm already wondering what to do about the bills in my house while I go away for 2 months next year

Whatever you do, do NOT put it in your name and let your housemates just pay you.

It'll be your name on the credit reports and you who'll be responsible

If there are a few of you - try and split it up so that one person pays the gas, one the water etc. That way you'll only be resonsible for making sure that one thing gets paid from your account.

Shared bills are a pain in the arse, which is why i'm glad our place is all bills inc. phew.

Direct Debits are awesome - how did people survive without these ??

So easy to set up too. Would say try and get them set up so they come out just after your pay goes into the bank. That way they are the first thing that comes of your pay, and then you know what you have left to spend for the rest of the week/month.
