| The charge is excessive and nobody disputes that but at the same time the world is full of stupid people so you have to keep your eye on the ball and keep yourself out of trouble.
It might only be 19p but it was enough to cost you and if you had spent a couple of minutes a week looking things over it could possibly have been avoided.

Problem with getting arsey with the bank is that they could just tell him to **** off and close his account/overdraft.
Presuming he has an overdraft already (and the charge is for exceeding the limit) then he'll end up owing them a lot more money, which becomes payable immediately.

Just go down to your bank and explain the situation to them. If they won't remove the charges out of decency, I presume you can move your account? If you have a student loan with them, then you can threaten to move that (I presume you can do that). You can threaten to write a letter to the student union... etc etc. Basically, if they won't do something out of courtesy, then threaten to be a pain in the ass.
Students are quite valuable to banks.
| The costs borne by the bank have to to be represented in the charge to the customer. £350 cumulative charges is not apt. Its downright illegal and he would win in court.

And look, to the people who keep telling me to check my bank account, why should I have to check when I spent about 2 hours before i went away sorting out what bills were owed over the summer, and made sure the right amount of money was available. yes 19p ffs. anyway that is not the point, kym has suggested i ring up citizens advice and see what they say, so am going to do this as well. </BLOCKQUOTE>
since im in an arsey and pedantic mood this morning im going to pick up on your basic error here.
You couldnt have spent 2 hours making sure you had the right amount of money because you went 19p overdrawn.
Why should you check? to prevent things like this happening. Im not saying you would have prevented the original charge but you could have limited the damage. Also its always worth checking just to make sure companies dont overcharge with bills etc or somone hasnt emptied your account through ID theft. Extreme cases i know but it doenst hurt to have a quick check once a week.

Apart from the cry suggestion, I can't think of anything else. Maybe go down the bank and beat someone up?
| Bit harsh, mine was stagnant at £900 overdrawn for 6 months after I quit uni and then they send me a letter asking me to come in and speak to them, which I did, explained the situation and they said fine and that was that  Not had any problems with my Natwest account ever. I'm guessing they have the address of your student digs, but you were home for the summer? If that is the case, them not contacting you does not really give you any legal grounds to fight them, as they'll just argue you hadn't updated your contact details.

| I didn't say be arsey - I would never recommend you go in with a negative attitude or put them on the defensive.
I did also imply that he check whether he could close his accounts/move his loans first.
It's all about knowing your value to them, or potential problem you present.
Anyway, if he hasn't received any letters I think that's his main line of defence anyway.
