you're english going into the states? Ive gone through US customs loads and never been asked for any such thing, they usually ask where you're going, the address you're staying at (they'll get quite irritable if you dont have an exact address) and will ask why you're here and when you're due to return, thats about it really

I'm irish , and What you said is what I usually get asked but because once I was asked for such a letter, I think I should have one with me.
I'm thinking I'll just type it out myself, only thing is I dont have a letter head, but If they have a problem with my letter they can always ring to confirm I work there.

If they are really that strict at getting into America then I'm never going to get in as I'll try and drink on the plane to get me to sleep and I can't sleep on planes so that is not a good impression to make when entering a country

Last time I was in the States, last May I think, they just asked for details of where I was staying and that was it. I'd signed the Visa Waiver form thing. Not sure if an Irish citizen has one of those.
