My car (H-reg Peugeot 205, Diesel, old, but only done 55k miles) has been for it's MOT today and failed. It needs new front shocks and the steering sorting out (major work) to pass the test.
In addition it needs some metal coolant pipes replacing.
All in this is going to cost me about £500.
I'm not querying the price (it seems fair and the mechanics know me, so I trust it is), but the toss up is between paying the cash and hoping for another year out of it, or throwing in the towel and selling for scrap.
I really don't need a 'better' car at the moment as I only use it for a few local journeys a week and 2-3 longer trips (2 hours) a month.
Do you think it's worth paying the cash and sticking it out or am I being a fool?
DO what I do. I am in a similar situation to you - the car is not worth much, I have had a couple of pricey repairs on it but on the whole, it is in good nick. I am keeping with it.
the car isnt really worth £500 so unless everything else is in decent condition, I'd scrap it, do you have any other money with which to buy a new car?
P.S having had a quick look on Autotrader, I cant find an old 205 for sale worth more than £450
I could afford a new car, but for what I'd use it for, I really don't think it's worth it at the moment. Also I'm not too keen on leaving a new car for long periods of time out on the streets near me.
As with Gav, generally, the car is in pretty good shape - it passed the MOT apart from on these two issues and the coolant leak is just something that's been bugging me.
Another issue is that I'm completley bogged down with work and Masters deadlines at the moment, so part of me is up for simply paying the money out of convenience. It's still a hefty amount though.

You don't now apparantly, something to do with the Japanese wanting the metal or something vague I don't really remember.
I know we managed to get rid of about 7 cars we had on our land and actually got a couple of hundred quid for 'em which was a bonus as some had been there for years.
I say scrap it, you could buy a half-decent car with MOT for about the same price.
