Default A silly question: How are Cows continuously able to produce milk?

I've never really thought about this and quite frankly I'm a little frightened by it all.

So how do they do it? Are just able to naturally produce milk, or is it chemically induced?

I *think* that they are chemically induced to do it, simulate the same conditions that come about when they're with calf because like humans thats when they produce milk normally.

A cow will produce milk until it's calfs stop suckling, so if you suckle a cow (by milking it) it'll continue producing milk.

Same principles apply for women. This concept was used in history by having 'nurses' - nursey in BlackAdder for example. Women who had had children continued to be suckled by aristocratic children so 'Mummy' didn't have to.

It's natural. The more that gets taken out, the more active the milk producing glands become.

That's how it works with my missus anyway.

We went to a wedding the other day, so she wasn't milked for 10 hours. She had to go and hand pump herself in the restaurant washroom to relieve the pressure.

Jesus wept!

A cow has a calf every year. Therefore they produce milk like any other mammal and due to selective breeding over hundreds of years modern dairy cows produce far more milk than would be necessary for a single calf.
