Default Should only the club captain be allowed to speak to the referee?

Wigan handed FA misconduct charge

Wigan have been charged by the Football Association with failing to control their players at Newcastle on Saturday.

"The charge relates to the conduct of their players towards referee Steve Bennett in two separate incidents," said an FA statement.

Wigan have until Wednesday 19 September to respond to the FA's charge.

The Latics lost 1-0 to a late Michael Owen goal at St James' Park and had midfielder Kevin Kilbane sent off after 46 minutes for two bookable offences

---------------------------------------

So Wigan are the latest club to be fined for 'failing to control their players' during a game. This was for surrounding the referee to question his decisions during the game. Alot of clubs do this, so should the F.A change the rules saying only the captain can speak to the referee to question a decision and if other players surround the referee then he should issue them all yellow cards (except the captain) for dissent?

Players are putting increased pressure on referees to make decisions, so should something be done?

Discuss.....

no, players should be allowed to vent - most referees will accept this.

if it goes above and beyond, you get situations like this.

Yes, like in rugby, only the captains speak to the ref, and of course the player being punished.

Proles will be proles.

Arguing with the ref is taught at an early age.

It's a football culture thing unfortunately - would take years to get it out of the game. It doesn't happen very often in other sports like Rugby, Cricket etc, but thats because its nipped in the bud immediately with cards, fines and sin bins.

The only way to stop it happening is make the punishments so harsh that it starts affecting the team. Simple fact is they do it because they can get away with it.

I dont understand why football players can't act like rugby players do towards the ref? Shows just Football is played by the lowest common denominator.
