tbh as an employer I wouldn't be fussed. I'd pick people without any real bias towards their university education, including whether they went at all.
I'm purely talking about taking fresh graduates on.

Obviously once someone has a real CV, their degree is immaterial as far as I'm concerned. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Very true.

But then having said that, I wouldn't look at anything under a 2:1 anyway.

And I know I'm not alone in being slightly leary of folks with firsts from top universities as well. I'd need to be convinced that they're not completely socially inept.
As an employer I'd prefer a 2:2 from a uni which is strong in a particular field, than a 2:1 or first from a generally good university that isn't anything special in that subject area. </BLOCKQUOTE>

Each employer has rankings of the reputation of each course?

Specialists certainly will. The law firms will know exactly how each university ranks in terms of its law teaching.

Generalist employers much less so. My experience comes from IBM, and they will generally know which are the top 20 or so in the rankings, and that's as far as they'll go.
