It all depends- some 'bad' universities have carved out reputations for decent, 'non-academic', specific courses (such as graphic design and the like). So in that case a 2.1 in a good course in a bad uni would be equally worth a 1st on a bad course in a good uni. (Apologies for the woolly terms btw).
All ******** really as it's open to the interpretation of the employer; some people are simply impressed with a first class degree on its own.

As an employer I'd look at the Uni first.
But then having said that, I wouldn't look at anything under a 2:1 anyway.
And I know I'm not alone in being slightly leary of folks with firsts from top universities as well. I'd need to be convinced that they're not completely socially inept.

| As an employer I'd prefer a 2:2 from a uni which is strong in a particular field, than a 2:1 or first from a generally good university that isn't anything special in that subject area.

I went to Portsmouth which was considered the best Polytechnic at the time, then it became a mid-range University.
I got offers from 'proper' universities and actually chose Portsmouth!! :o
tbh as an employer I wouldn't be fussed. I'd pick people without any real bias towards their university education, including whether they went at all.

| I'm purely talking about taking fresh graduates on.
Obviously once someone has a real CV, their degree is immaterial as far as I'm concerned.

took me all summer to get a job, i finished with a 2:2 in computer science at Univ of Manchester, that said i wanted to stay up north, there seemed to be more opertunities down south..
it's as much about finding the right course for you, take a good look at exactly what the course entails, i hated mine and got a 2:2, when i got AAB at A-Level, i'm definitely capable of higher than a 2:2 if the course interested me...
