The year Barça won the double Messi was very important. He wasn’t that important in the CL (he was injured), although he was vital in the game at the Beach, but in the league when Barça won 14 games in a row he was immense (they won 20+ games in a row including other competitions).

Last year he was great in most of the games he played. He broke his foot and was awful against Liverpool but... ask Rooney if it’s easy to recover from a broken foot. He and Eto’o, especially Eto’o, wouldn’t have played against Liverpool if their replacement weren’t crap (Gudjohnsen, Saviola and Giuly).

Is Cesc far more important to Arsenal? Well, yes and no. I consider Messi our best player but we also have Henry, Ronaldinho and Eto’o, and Arsenal have? It’s like saying that Arteta is better than Cesc because Mikel is far more important to Everton.
