By 1946, Soviet designers were still having trouble in perfecting the German-designed, axial-flow jet engine, and new airframe designs and near-sonic wing designs were threatening to outstrip development of the jet engines needed to power them. Soviet aviation minister Mikhail Khrunichev and aircraft designer Alexander Sergeyevich Yakovlev suggested to Joseph Stalin that the USSR buy advanced jet engines from the British. Stalin is said to have replied: "What fool will sell us his secrets?" However, he gave his assent to the proposal, and Artem Mikoyan, engine designer Vladimir Klimov, and other officials traveled to the United Kingdom to request the engines. To Stalin's amazement, the British Labour government and its pro-Soviet Minister of Trade (Sir Stafford Cripps) were perfectly willing to provide technical information and even a licence to manufacture the Rolls-Royce Nene centrifugal-flow jet engine. This engine was reverse-engineered and produced in modified form as the Soviet Klimov VK-1 jet engine , later incorporated into the MiG-15 (Rolls-Royce later attempted to claim £207m in license fees, without success).
| Yeah, and the centrifugal Mig 15 was badly outclassed by the axial flow F86 Sabre. Who says we don't do anything useful nown again.

| When I was in Liaisons back in the 80s, it was the same - seems nothing much has changed.

I'd be surprised if they could get their Backfires into the air, let alone have even slightly up to date.

| They have plenty über rich, über nationalistic eedjits in the country, it wouldn't surprise me if some of that privatized money quietly flows into the upkeep of the might <STRIKE>Soviet</STRIKE> Russian airfleet.
Better not 'misunderestimate' them, I think. Don't forget that the people at the rudder are exactly the same people who were there before the regime change from 'soviet' fascism to 'capitalist' fascism.

The rubbish
The Binders and Bisons etc have gone
alot of the backfires have also gone either to spares or just left to rust
But the cream of the fleet is still there, newly regenerated by the increased oil revenues available to the russian government
Same with the former Soviet Navy and Army
The old junks gone, numbers are significantly down
But the best units and equipment remain
