in the end it comes down to whether you need a player that'll help out defensively or not, as a second striker/attacking midfielder with a midfield four behind him i would always choose scholes, as someone in the midfield four i would always choose gerrard
like the henry/rvn debate, it was the simplest ever, henry is the better player and better at creating, rvn better at finishing and getting into the positions, and anyone that tried to compare them further was arguing for the sake of it

Paul Scholes at his peak, or Steven Gerrard? Post #42
I'd say Scholes, as much for the fact that most talents you can compare in footballers can be improved by training etc, whereas the sort of vision and improvisation that Scholes possesses is innate. It's the thing that sets the geniuses apart from the good and even great players.

Paul Scholes at his peak, or Steven Gerrard? Post #45
The fact that Gerrard has been in all kinds of pressure situations and still played very well is a massive plus for him. He has taken games by the scruff of the neck and won them by himself - Olympiakos is the best example of this for me. He never shirks his responsibility, and has proven his leadership skills on numerous occasions. He has the ability to play anywhere on the pitch and not look out of place, and if I was to find any weakness in his game it would be that he maybe doesn't trust his team mates enough. But, with the Liverpool sides he has played in over the past 4 years can you blame him ??
I would like to ask this question - could Scholes play anywhere else on the pitch and still not look out of place ?? I know Gerrard can because he has proved it.

but if its gerrard v scholes, both at their peak, gerrard easily, much more of a complete footballer, and has done a lot in a much worse team, while scholes has never been out of a bad team, except for him never performing for england
Ah, but did Liverpool depending on Gerrard so much make him out to be a much better footballer than Scholes in a team where he wasnt depended on at all? </BLOCKQUOTE>
yeah, for his work rate alone, scholes never rallied the team those times that nobody performed like gerrard would do week in week out
plus all this was done when he wasnt at his peak </BLOCKQUOTE>
I would argue that he did but it has been required far less often. Even right back to some of his earliest games against QPR and Port Vale he was popping up with match winning performances. About the only time Scholes was really relied on was during the first half of the 95/96 season when Cantona was out and Cole wasnt scoring and his goals kept Man Utd in the title race right upto and and past christmas. Although I guess he was very instrumental in the 02/03 seasons as well. There is a very very distinct difference to the team when he's fit compared to when he's out and I think it's a bit unfair to basically criticise him because his team has visibly required those kinds of performances much less often.
