the 'your abilities' was a general phrase meaning skills you have acquired.

i.e. if you have a massive **** its fair to say you may exude a certain air of confidence in both yourself and your skills/abilities.

e.g you go to see a consultant prior to surgery and he's twitchy, self doubting and really leaves you with a sense of fear

conversely you see another doctor and he is supremely confident in his abilities and should leave you feeling reassured

doctor 1 is unlikely to become a world renowned surgeon.
