I was watching the England match yesterday and thought I heard England fans boo Phil Neville when he came on. I dont particularly rate Neville, but he has been selected and I am sure will do his best for his country.
Why then do fans boo their own players both at club and country? what is the point of it? What do they hope to achieve - him not to come on? to make him cry? I just dont know.
Displeasure, basically. Take the point of Hamburg fans. Rafael Van der Vaart always played up his loyalty, said he'd only leave for a "dream club", even turned down a move to Bayern Munich. Then Valencia came, he had a photo taken in their shirt, whined in the media, "injured" himself by picking up his son in a European game so he wouldn't be cup-tied. They had every right to boo him, but didn't due to general personality. Though I believe he still got/gets a lot of ****, so much so his wife had to move away.
Could argue that the Neville booing was perhaps too much, but the Bentley booing was fair enough. I don't think they want to achieve anything but to show their displeasure with the guy, make him feel bad hopefully and show that if he wants a place in their affections he'll have to earn it.
I heard Bentley getting the bird, but not Neville.
At Newcastle, Kieron Dyer was booed on occassion - mainly to do with his treatment of Sir Bobby Robson (refusing to play right-wing and also disrespecting the captain's armband) Again fair enough as far as I'm concerned because Dyer is an oudious little *****. It's nothing short of a miracle that we managed to get £6milion for him.
Alot of England fans dont really seem to be into football per se, more daytrippers, nice day out. Booing kind of fits into the whole pantomime occasion that they think they're at
Can see why fans booed Bentley, but why on earth neville? He hasn't done anything wrong, ok so he's not the best player but the managers picked him and feels hes good enough to wear the shirt of england.
Totally understand it for bentley. a professional footballer claiming he is too tired to play for the U21s is laughable. it will be interesting to see if we qualify for 2008 and he is selected in the squad if he is too tired to play or not. And if he isnt to tired will he have played as much football as last season.
Neville on the otherhand was totally unjust, its not his fault that he is selected to play for his country. Neville is nothing but a consumate professional, turns up works hard and goes home. To boo him is just stupid.
Booing neville makes booing bentley pointless though. Booing a player for a reason losses all meaning after booing a player for no reason.
