Shah might not be the right answer but I'm pretty sure Vaughan isn't either, immense as he used to be as a batsmen and probaby still is as a captain.

that's what frustrates me beyond belief. vaughan is 1 year older than tres. over their last ten tests, vaughan averages 35 and tres averages 34. vaughan's a tremendous captain. tres' mentalness is about equal to vaughan's injuries as they could both miss games at any moment.
yet through all of that, you see vaughan into the team as a backwards step, whilst tres is the answer. that's terrible </BLOCKQUOTE>
Tressy ifb more of a throwaway comment to be honest - looking at the test team at the moment Cook, Strauss, Colly, KP, Bell and Flintoff (seven) would all certainly be in my top, fully-fit side (I would play with four frontline bowlers) - and then the seventh batsmen being either Trescothick/Vaughan/Shah/Joyce/someone else.
Arguments for all of their inclusion
imo, have to remember that in some of those matches Trescothick was dealing with off-the-field issues, and personally I find it easier to imagine him coming back from that than Vaughan stringing together a run of fitness. Plus Trescothick was opening, I would say that 34 from an opener was more valuable than 35 for your number 3/4? Also - Trescothick our best slip, so a far better fielder than Vaughan (although obviously can't forget Vaughan's captaincy).
So hardly 'terrible'

- oh and Tressy one of our better players of spin, an area in which our batting is fairly weak.
Sadly doesn't lok like a great deal more play today, god darn it.
