Top seeds

The draw, held at the Empire State Building in New York, pitted the top seeds Roger Federer and Justine Henin against qualifiers.

The Swiss world number one has already won a hat-trick of US Open titles and is bidding to become the first man to win four times in a row since American Bill Tilden in the 1920s.

Big-serving American John Isner could book a date with Federer if he can blast his way to the third round, while former champion Andy Roddick would be a quarter-final opponent for the Swiss superstar.

Second seed Rafael Nadal faces Australian qualifier Alun Jones in the first round, while third seed Novak Djokovic from Serbia faces a real test in his opener as he plays former Wimbledon semi-finalist Mario Ancic.

Women's draw

Top seed in the women's draw, Justine Henin, who won the tournament in 2003, plays a qualifier in the first round.

Eighth seed Serena Williams could face the Belgian should the two make the quarter-finals, repeating their meetings in the French Open and at SW19 this year.

Defending champion Maria Sharapova has been drawn against Italian Roberta Vinci in her opening round tie, with a possible quarter-final meeting with fellow Russian and number six seed Anna Chakvetadze.

Wimbledon champion Venus Williams also plays a qualifier first up, but could face fifth seed Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round, while she is also in the same half of the draw as her sister Serena and Henin.

Number three seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic will open up her campaign in New York against Slovakia's Jarmila Gajdosova.
